A young lady, Jessy Oluchi escaped with her life from this tragic accident. The authorities have not been paying attention to the reckless attitude of “keke drivers” in Nigeria. The keke drivers are not driving with conscience; they have not been following the rules and regulations hence numerous accidents that have killed, maimed and traumatised the passengers. I know quite a lot of victims of reckless driving of keke drivers. Keke transport was meant for two people at the back and a driver. It was built for sightseeing. However in Nigeria due to lack of good transport system, the tricycle (keke) is loaded with four passengers and the driver. The front seat was meant for the driver but no, that is not the case in Nigeria. In Nigeria, one passenger is seated with the driver. The back seat was meant for two people but no, in Nigeria three passengers sit at the back.

However, based on the above, how could the keke driver maneuver? The passenger sitting at the front impedes the driver, thereby reducing the ability to maneuver in terms of emergency. With the above scenario, are we doing the right thing in Nigeria? This leads to numerous accidents on the streets of Nigeria; no one cares. There is road safety commission but they are doing nothing about it. Sometimes they take bribe from the driver, encouraging to misbahave and do the wrong things. A lot of people have died, maimed and traumatised as the result of recklessness of keke drivers and the corrupt practices of those agencies that are charged with managing the road safety (the police and the road safety commission). Why are Nigerians not emulating good practice and doing the right thing? Why can’t we seek to emulate how others around us are doing the right things? We have to obey the law.

Another obvious contributor to these unnecessary accidents is “speeding.” Keke drivers compete with the taxi drivers, speeding to reach their destination for another round of passengers; no one cares. I do not know if the passengers whose lives are in danger complain. This is absurddity. I do not know the reason why the people of Nigeria love to put their lives on the line of danger. We must wake up now to do the right thing before it is too late. It is even late anyway as many people have lost their lives and other disfigured. I am requesting everyone of my friends to help me campaign against all these anormalities in Nigeria; it is for the interest of all of us. Everyone uses keke one way or the other. Can we start now to speak out against the reckness of these keke drivers? He who has ear let him hear!
