GOWON AND THE BLOOD OF INNOCENT IGBOS (No Happy Birthday To General Yakubu Gowon at 85)

I cannot wish General Yakubu Gowon a happy birthday. The reason being that he presided over the killings of innocent Igbos who had nothing to do with January 1966 coup. The coup organised by three Igbo boys and two Yoruba boys in 1966 was used as an excuse to massacre over 30,000 innocent Igbos in 1967. Gowon had the power to stop it but he did not. Nigerians owe unreserved apologies to the Igbos; we cannot sweep this crime under the carpet as if nothing happened. What happened in 1967 is unforgetable. Most of the people who took part in presiding over the civil war (1967-1970) are still alive and still have chance to right the wrongs of 1967. The Yorubas must accept the part played by their two sons, Major Ademoyega and Major Banjo who fought the war on the side of Biafra. For Nigeria to move forward, they must call for “Peace Conference” hence Gowon and others are still alive. Gowon must tell Nigeria why he did not pick the distress call from his commander, General Aguyi-Ironsi in the early morning of July while the coup was taking place? Why did Gowon not stop the massacre of Igbos in 1967? Why did Gowon not implement the agreement on Aburi meeting? Why did Gowon not stop the seizure of Igbo properties in the name of abandon property? Why did Gowon confiscated the savings of Igbos in the Nigerian Banks? Can Nigerians now tell me, with all these questions yet unanswered, why do we keep talking about one Nigeria when Nigerians cannot even say “sorry” to the Igbos who commited no crime against any Nigerian yet they were massacred? I LEAVE NIGERIAN LEADERS WITH THEIR CONSCIENCE! History will vindicate the just. General Yakubu Gowon, I will not wish you happy birthday for sake of my relatives who died in your hands.
