Former Economy Minister of Russia, Mr Aleksei Alyukayev have been jailed for eight (8) years for accepting $2million bribe. The ex-minister did not steal from the national treasury but accepted bribe which results to abuse of power. I do not know what Nigerians would make out of this. Taking bribe is unofficially lawful in Nigeria. From the president of Nigeria to the councillors of local government take all sorts of bribes. Nigerian officials go as far as stealing the money from the national treasury. The funny thing about it is that all of them go free, and are praised for doing so. In the United Kingdom, just five hours away from Nigeria usually jail their officials for accepting lunch, gifts or inflating expenses. This in Nigeria is normal, who cares? He who moans about it is castigated as envy, jealous and enemy of progress. Nigeria has never learnt any good practice from our neighbours. We only imitate the bad thing. $2million bribe in Nigerian term is a chicken change as we call it, but in the eyes of the world it is a serious crime. No president, governor, minister and other government officials can swear that he has not taken $2million bribe or stolen it from the public fund while in office in Nigeria. Can any of them reading this stand up to be counted. Nigeria stinks. Nigerians also stink as they sing, clap and praise corruption and corrupt officials. How can the senate and the house of representatives make it a criminal offence to embezzle public fund or accept bribe while in office. Both houses of Nigeria’s law making cannot make such law as all of them sitting in it have committed more crime than the Russian ex-minister. Official stealing is lawful in Nigeria. God forbid evil and all of you are a disgrace to mankind.
